Kyle Simpson Teams up with trivago to create a JS Developer Excellence program

We have all seen the job ads that look for a “developer with at least 8 years of experience and a Computer Science degree”, a “JavaScript rockstar”, or somebody with “excellent command of technologies A, B, C, D, and E”.

They are annoying in two ways.

First, they are unrealistic. In today’s software developer job market, somebody fitting the above descriptions usually does not have to look for a job. Rather, the job has to find them. Second, they are unfair. They are unfair to young, talented developers who simply did not yet have the opportunity to accumulate that kind of experience.

trivago has always valued personality and mindset over pure technical skill, because we know that those skills need to be learned and kept up to date anyway.

That is why we have been able to capture talented engineers even before they finish university, and why our job ads don’t require experience or prior knowledge with the technologies we use. If you have the right mindset and are willing to learn then we’ll provide you with everything you need to become an expert.

But how do we actually do that? Aside from providing engineers with the time and opportunity to gain experience, we also organize workshops and invite experts to share their knowledge.

We pair new engineers with mentors who support them during the on-boarding period and introduce them to a culture of openly sharing mistakes so that everyone can learn from them.

In order to provide even more growth opportunities to our engineers, we are now teaming up with Kyle Simpson, also known as getify, author of the famous “You don’t know JS” book series and author of many of the best e-learning courses for JavaScript engineers, to create the “JS Developer Excellence program”.

As part of this program, we will create learning material that is specifically tailored towards the needs of trivago employees. Material that will help them get up to speed much faster and that will help them go the last mile on their journey towards true excellence - realising that they still have plenty to learn and that learning never ends. :)

Now, in addition to all our usual workshops, traditional e-learning content, expert knowledge sharing, our talents will also get the opportunity to get access to learning material specifically tailored for their needs as well as the chance to just ask Kyle for advice.

”I am tremendously excited to unlock the full potential of trivago’s engineers by working with them to create the Developer Excellence program.”, said Kyle. “What trivago knows is that to attract and keep the best talent in the industry, the best thing is to invest in continued learning so that everyone is empowered to keep improving.”

To celebrate this new partnership, Kyle and trivago decided to host his “JavaScript foundations” & “JavaScript: The recent parts” workshop on July 20th & 21st (Saturday & Sunday). And we wouldn’t be ourselves if we didn’t offer you the chance to participate as well!

This time we’ve reserved 10 seats in the workshop for external visitors. The workshop will start at 9am and will finish roughly at 5:30pm on both days. Participation is free and we’ll even provide pizza and free drinks.

If you’d like to participate in the workshop, please sign up here.

In case you’d like to know what it’s like to spent time with trivago, you can read the reviews from Debbie O’Brien and Adrià Fontcuberta who won a spot for our last workshop with Kyle.
